skills as a beginner and makes for a nice quick craft for those who are experienced. If you want to do your bit and do some crafting for charity, you could use this knitting pattern for poppies to make some to sell in the lead-up to Remembrance day and donate the proceeds to the Poppy Appeal.
Each year, many people across Britain wear a poppy in remembrance and as a symbol of thanks to all those who have served in the armed forces. The poppy became an official symbol of remembrance after the Royal British Legion launched the first ‘Poppy Appeal’ in 1921.
They ordered nine million poppies and started to sell them on the 11th of November that year; the poppies sold out almost immediately and raised over £106,000 (which was an incredible amount at the time) to help support war veterans. The Poppy Appeal has become a tradition ever since, with volunteers signing up to become Poppy Appeal collectors and poppy sellers from the end of October until Remembrance Day, which is observed on the second Sunday in November.
Remembrance Sunday 2022 falls on Sunday 13th November and the Poppy Appeal 2022’s official launch is Thursday 27th of October. If you’d like to make a donation or get involved with this year's Poppy Appeal, you can find all the detail on the Royal British Legion website.
