At SSE, we are fully committed to helping Greater Manchester, and the country, achieve its ambitious and essential net zero goals but we face a couple of key challenges in doing so.
Firstly, we need to rapidly upskill the workforce to fill the STEM jobs that will be needed to facilitate the transition to renewable energy. Secondly, we need to ensure we take the public on the journey with us.
Today we are proud to be a headline sponsor of this year’s Green Summit, hosted by Mayor Andy Burnham and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).
In meeting the challenges we face together, SSE Energy Solutions has a new Social Value strategy that we feel will ensure a fair and just transition to net zero and it’s right at the heart of our 2030 business goals.
Put simply, we believe in working with local people on local projects, whilst investing in the communities we work in.
We want to diversify our workforce and upskill local people. We know we have a responsibility to influence social impacts as we transition out of high-carbon activities and into a net zero world but it’s about much more than just recruitment. It’s also about becoming a trusted community partner.
To achieve this, we’re launching regional business hubs across the UK, the first of which is up and running right here in Manchester. The hubs will drive our engagement with local suppliers and charities, making donations and in-kind contributions to specific local community projects.
In Manchester, we are already working with various public and private sector organisations to achieve this goal, forging close relationships with the Green Skills
