Christopher Vourlias “Fahrenheit 11/9” producers and Academy Award nominees Carl Deal and Tia Lessin (“Trouble the Water”) are developing a documentary that explores the world of climate profiteering and how the planet’s wealthiest are planning to weather the uncertain century ahead. The duo will be pitching their project during CPH:FORUM, the international financing and co-production event held during the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival (CPH:DOX), which runs March 21-April 3.“Sink or $wim” is inspired by journalist McKenzie Funk’s bestseller “Windfall: The Booming Business of Global Warming,” which details how a growing legion of corporations, high-stakes gamblers and entrepreneurs are cashing in on the climate crisis. “We’ve all seen a lot of movies about climate change.
And there are a lot of movies that offer solutions,” Deal tells Variety. “We think it’s time to tell a new kind of climate story, to take an audience on a rollicking journey into a side of the story they may not know is happening – to follow the money into the dystopian future that is happening now.”He adds: “The climate is changing, we’re causing it, and some people are making a killing on it.”Currently in development, “Sink or $wim” will follow a colorful cast of climate prospectors, profiteers and their ultra-rich clientele, whose interrelated storylines will shed light on how the privileged few will survive and prosper at the expense of those without economic or political power, so long as the free market continues to dictate the world’s response to the global climate crisis. It’s far from a portrait of earnest green energy advocates installing solar panels or erecting windmills to wean the world off fossil fuels, says Lessin.

Brooke Mazurek It is an impossible game I keep asking Gloria and Emilio Estefan to play, the game of hypothetical “what-ifs.” Although the husband and wife duo are currently in Vero Beach, Fla., where they have a getaway home and resort, their focus is set squarely on Miami. For the better portion of five decades, the Magic City is the place the Estefans have called home, and during the “It’s a Wonderful Life” rabbit hole I’ve asked them to spiral into, we’re playing out who Gloria and Emilio — and the city of Miami — might have become had the most important couple in the history of Latin music not stayed rooted there.“What if you’d left and moved on?” I ask them.Gloria and Emilio are, after all, at a point in their lives when they’re able to tap into the gift of perspective. Time has passed, more than 100 million albums have sold, 38 hits have climbed the Billboard charts, Gloria has won eight Grammys and Emilio, 20, and two Presidential Medals of Freedom received.

Guy Lodge Film CriticIn the 16 years since “An Inconvenient Truth” became an unlikely box-office sleeper and Oscar winner, the climate change documentary has grown into its own distinct subgenre — one that has to devise increasingly eye-catching ways to net the attention of viewers who may have heard the message before, but have yet to really internalize it. The Al Gore-led PowerPoint presentation of Davis Guggenheim’s film looks positively quaint beside the grandiose, you-are-there spectacle of “Into the Ice,” which keeps the science simple and instead concentrates on ravishing imagery to remind us of a grim, inarguable and oft-repeated reality: The ice caps are melting, and we are barely doing a thing about it.
