Messaging online can be fraught with worries that what you are saying won't stay between you and the recipient. However, a new update from Facebook could bring peace of mind to many users that their messages won't be copied and forwarded. Following promises to increase user security and privacy, Facebook has updated their messaging service to better protect users.
The CEO of parent company Meta and Facebook founder has said in a post on Friday that an update to Messenger would notify users if an image of their chat has been captured by another person. According to USA Today, the rollout has already started in the USA and is expected to hit Europe later this week. It will also notify users when people try to screenshot on the ‘vanish mode’, which deletes messages as soon as the chat window closes. Facebook could certainly use a boost after the company experienced its first-ever decline in daily users this week, which saw it plummet $200bn in the stock market.
The latest updates will also apply to Instagram, which is owned by Meta. Posting on Facebook, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said: "New update for end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats so you get a notification if someone screenshots a disappearing message. "We're also adding GIFs, stickers, and reactions to encrypted chats too." He then shared an exchange with his wife, Priscilla Chan, to demonstrate the new feature. In the image, users can see he is notified that "Priscilla took a screenshot" of their chat, to which she replies: "saving that one for later!"
