Players outraged about Wordle again — this time over ‘too British’ answer

Warning: This story contains spoilers for the online game Wordle. They felt like an American Wordler in London.Amid ongoing complaints that the New York Times ruined Wordle, Thursday’s answer caused an uproar among US-based players, who deemed the answer decidedly “too British.” A Twitter thread detailing the allegedly Anglocentric vocab — spoilers below — is currently blowing up online. For the uninitiated, the viral brain teaser — in which players get six tries to guess a new five-letter word each day — has become a daily routine for puzzle lovers of late. Nonetheless, American Wordlers were flummoxed by Wordle 250’s answer “bloke” — British slang for “man,” which they found incomprehensible to anybody who didn’t live across the pond.

New Zealand Parliament Votes To Ban ‘Conversion Therapy’

New Zealand has voted to protect LGBTQ youth from so-called “conversion therapy.”In an almost unanimous vote, the New Zealand Parliament voted 112 to eight in favour of banning the controversial  practice. So-called “conversion therapy” is the discredited and dangerous practice that is intended to change, often by force, a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. The New Zealand Herald reported that it is now an offence to “perform conversion practices on a child or young person aged under 18, or on someone with impaired decision-making capacity. Such offences would be subject to up to three years’ imprisonment, and up to five years where it has caused serious harm, irrespective of age.”Leader of End Conversion Therapy NZ Shaneel Lal tweeted, “The ban on conversion therapy is a win for humanity, not just the queer community.

James Blunt’s music deployed in New Zealand to repel COVID protesters

James Blunt in their latest effort to repel protesters who are camped outside of parliament. The demonstrators, who are angry at COVID-19 vaccine mandates, have been blocking the streets of the country’s capital, Wellington, since Tuesday (February 8).Tactics used by the local authorities to try and get rid of the protesters have included turning on the water sprinklers on the lawn where they camped. But protesters retaliated by digging trenches and building makeshift drainpipes to re-route the water, according to BBC News. When the sprinkler tactic proved ineffective, police turned to blasting out Barry Manilow‘s greatest hits, which include ‘Mandy’ and ‘Could It Be Magic’, on a 15-minute loop from one of parliament’s loudspeakers, as well as the ’90s Spanish hit ‘Macarena’ and a number of vaccine messages. After catching wind of what was happening, Blunt offered his services to New Zealand authorities via Twitter.
