An ‘exhausted’ Scots student has told how she was forced to sofa surf for three months while desperately trying to secure accommodation amid the housing crisis. Imogen Irvine was left without a flat after her lease ended in May but found other properties were being let out within just minutes of being advertised online.
The 19-year-old, who is studying and working in Edinburgh, was unable to return to her parents in Alva, Clackmannanshire, as she needed to keep her job to afford to live. She told Edinburgh Live : “I have been couch surfing since May after looking for a flat all summer since mid-April.
"We've only just now managed to get a flat. I moved to Edinburgh at the start of first year and my tenancy ended in my last flat in May, and I've been couch surfing since. I have my job here so I couldn't afford to quit and move home."
"I was working at Costa for most of the summer, doing at least 35 hours per week. I moved to Contini Cannonball in August and have done around 25 hours a week, cutting down now with term-time."
Imogen was forced to go from friend to friend to find somewhere to stay while also working and trying to find a flat of her own. The stress of dealing with the situation has severely affected the ecological and environmental sciences student’s mental health.
She explained: "I was taking couches and spare rooms my friends offered me. I stayed with my boyfriend for some time too, but we only started dating in May so not too often. I was jumping around from place to place week by week.
"I had to send stuff home and kept a lot of stuff in my car. I have things in all my friends' flats too. Mental health wise, it really wasn't great. I have pre-existing mental health problems and this just made it so much

It’s the series’ first major look at a character’s domestic life, and in an Italian American household in South Philly, a large, welcoming sofa had to be the centerpiece. “It’s the first thing I asked for,” Walter says about the plastic on the couch, seen here in first look images that Variety can exclusively reveal. “Well, first I asked for plastic on the lampshades, but people might not understand that.
