Sir Alex Ferguson's former assistant Rene Meulesteen has said the club should have kept the outgoing boss in some kind of role behind the scenes when he retired in 2013.
Ferguson was replaced by David Moyes who decided to bring in his own staff from Everton.
However, the now-West Ham boss has gone on record to say that he made a mistake by not keeping some of the coaching staff when he took over from the Scot nine years ago.
Moyes was sacked eight months into a six-year contract as United struggled to replicate the the wins and success under Sir Alex.
And Meulesteen has said that the club should have used the outgoing United manager to help the transition to his successor.
“There were two options,” he said in an interview with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, via The Mirror. "Get someone from the outside who would do things entirely differently at once.
"Or involve Ferguson in the new course, in which the staff he had built up over the years could also play a role. With the appointment of David Moyes, the first choice was made - and that meant the rest of the staff could also leave with Ferguson.”
