Europe Leads the Way to Int’l Film Oscar Shortlist Hopes

EXCLUSIVE: Jayro Bustamante’s blended-genre La Llorona has had a wild two weeks, with a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and a berth on the Oscar shortlist for Best International Feature. BERLIN -- The Berlin International Film Festival on Thursday announced 15 films that are part of this year's competition and will compete for the top Golden and Silver Bear awards.

Oscars ceremony. Danish tragicomedy "Another Round" stars former James Bond villain Mikkelsen as a middle-aged alcoholic who vows to get drunk every day, as part of a pseudoscientific experiment featuring three fellow school teachers.

Unlike many of the other Oscar categories that shortlist their potential nominees at 15 contenders, the Makeup and Hairstyling branch only selects 10 films. Somewhat odd considering almost every narrative feature features a working member of their branch, but so be it.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the 15 shortlisted films for the International Film Oscar and despite the lack of screenings and in-person events, it’s a worthy list that should satisfy any cinephile. Among the 93 submissions, acclaimed films such as Thomas Vinterberg’s “Another Round” (Denmark), Jayro Bustamante’s “La Llorona” (Guatemala), and Philippe Lacôte’s “Night of Kings” (Ivory Coast) all made the cut.

283 films were submitted for the Academy Award’s Documentary Feature Oscar and now just 15 remain. AMPAS revealed the shortlist for both the Documentary Feature and Documentary Short with the former category featuring few upsets.

The categories and number of films to be revealed include documentary feature (15), documentary short subject (10), international feature (15), makeup and hairstyling (10), original score (15), original song (15), animated short film (10), live action short film (10) and visual effects (10).The shortlist voting concluded on Feb.

Sam Claflin and Veronica Echegui are toplining the romantic comedy Book Of Love, which shoots next month. Sky is producing the movie as a Sky Original for its markets, with XYZ Films handling rights for the rest of the world.
