John, at the White House on Friday to perform at A+E and History’s “A Night When Hope and History Rhyme,” looked visibly shocked and humbled as the president addressed the thousands in the audience. “Tonight is my great honor, and I mean this sincerely, to present the National Humanities Medal to Sir Elton John,” Biden said. A White House officer elaborated on John’s contributions, saying, “The President of the United States awards this National Humanities Medal to Sir Elton John for moving our souls with his powerful voice, one of the defining songbooks of all time. An enduring icon and advocate with absolute courage, who found purpose to challenge convention, shatter stigma and advance a simple truth: that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.”

Elton John was all in on a plan to perform at the White House before the world-famous rockin' piano player hangs it up — he says — for good. John is stopping by the South Lawn on Friday night for a show he's calling "A Night When Hope and History Rhyme," a reference to a poem by Irishman Seamus Heaney that President Joe Biden often quotes. It will be John's first White House gig since he performed with Stevie Wonder at a state dinner in 1998 honoring British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Hathaway, 39, sat next to US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour at the show on Wednesday (14 September) wearing a black turtleneck with a brown crocodile skirt and a matching jacket. Her hair was styled in a ponytail and she had a full eye-skimming fringe, reminiscent of her character Andy Sachs’ hair from the 2006 film.
