Hunter Ingram SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from the first two episodes of “The Veil,” now streaming on Hulu. No cigarette goes unsmoked in the premiere of FX’s new series “The Veil” — and that was all part of Elisabeth Moss’ plan. In the new series from “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight, Moss plays a woman named (for now) Imogen Salter, an undercover MI6 spy who is tasked with doing what the age of technological surveillance and espionage can’t do: use human intuition and skill to get information out of a target.
In her sights is Adilah (Yumna Marwan), a woman living in a refugee camp in Syria, who may or may not be the Djinn al Raqqa, a high-ranking ISIS commander. Working with Malik (Dali Benssalah), a French DGSE (Directorate-General for External Security) agent back in Paris, Imogen poses as an NGO worker to break Adilah out of the camp and earn her trust, all in the hopes of getting information from her about a rumored ISIS plot to detonate a bomb in a major American city in a week.
In order to do that, Imogen must commit to this latest undercover character, and Moss made the decision to have Imogen constantly smoking in the first episode. Not because she needs the nicotine, but because it has an effect on Adilah.
“It is to kind of ingratiate her with Adilah, and push her buttons,” Moss tells Variety. “It is a way of connecting with Adilah while also turning her off.
It is really smart, because the way of getting Adilah out of her shell is making her come out in anger and judgment about the smoking. It was a little fun, cool spy move.” Over the course of the two-episode premiere, now streaming on Hulu, Imogen and Adilah go on a road trip, quietly crossing borders toward Paris where Adilah can be

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Elisabeth Moss recently appeared on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast while promoting her new FX series “The Veil” and reflected on the “intimidating” but exhilarating set of James Mangold’s 1999 drama “Girl, Interrupted.” Moss was around 15 years old when she shot the movie and starred as Polly “Torch” Clark, a burn victim who suffers from schizophrenia. The cast was headlined by Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie, the latter of whom won an Oscar for her performance. Because of the tension that exists between their two characters, Moss said the film set became naturally divided into two camps.

Girl, Interrupted is one of those classics where it’s hard to imagine getting together such a star-studded cast. But it turns out there actually was maybe too much star power for one movie? The way one of the film’s stars talks about it two decades on, it sounds like Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder were rival girl gang leaders on set!

For the first time in 20 years, Jennifer Tilly doesn’t have to refer to herself in the third person when talking about “Chucky.” Since 1998’s “Bride of Chucky,” Tilly, 65, has been fluent in the ever-more-bizarre mythology of Don Mancini’s killer doll franchise. In that film, she played Tiffany, the human, serial-killing girlfriend of Chucky, who has her soul transported into a doll bride.

Selome Hailu When Justin Kuritzkes began writing what later became the hottest love triangle of the year, there was no star power involved. Though he was already an accomplished playwright and novelist (and the husband of Celine Song, the writer-director who provided last year’s buzziest love triangle with “Past Lives”), “Challengers” was Kuritzkes’ first screenplay and began as a document on his computer that no one was paying him to finish. But in 2021, “Challengers” appeared on the Black List, an annual roundup of the most popular unproduced scripts in Hollywood, which helped him sell it to producers Amy Pascal and Rachel O’Connor.
Every week it seems there are large numbers of indie and specialty releases vying for attention, impossible to do them all, so when the option of reviewing Nowhere Special was placed in front of me I resisted at first after discovering it actually premiered at the 2020 Venice Film Festival. That’s right, four years ago. I had to wonder what could possibly be good about a film delayed for that long in terms of getting a U.S. release date? Finally caving in to the persistent requests by the distributor and its passionate PR team, I decided to check it out. What I discovered was not that this was some sort of troubled film, not even close. Instead I found a spare but moving drama, powered by a remarkable lead performance, that is all about life and death and all things inbetween. At its heart it is also an inspiring story of dedicated parent and child, how we face the uncertain future, and what we leave behind. Nowhere Special is something special indeed. If you aren’t shedding well-earned tears by the end of this film you simply are not human.
