Pablo Larrain on Portraying Pinochet as a Vampire in ‘El Conde’ to Counter Fascism ‘That Comes in Different Shapes and Forms’ Around the World

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Chilean auteur Pablo Larraín is back in Venice – following “Spencer” in 2021 – with scathing satire “El Conde,” in which Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, a symbol of global fascism, resurfaces as a 250-year old vampire living in a rundown rural mansion after faking his death. The allegorical film, beautifully shot in black-and-white by ace cinematographer Ed Lachman, stars revered 87-year-old Chilean actor Jaime Vadell in the role of Pinochet, who in reality died at the age of 91 in 2006, unpunished and rich. During Pinochet’s 17-year regime, which began with a bloody military coup in 1973, more than 3,000 people died or disappeared due to political violence in Chile, which had previously experienced a long history of democracy.

‘Rebel Moon’ Trailer: Zack Snyder’s New Space Opera Epic Arrives December 22

Originally pitched as a new “Star Wars” tale in the days when Disney was taking new Lucasfilm pitches, Zack Snyder took a no or a maybe, and made it his own with his upcoming film, “Rebel Moon.” From those nascent beginnings, seeing if Kathleen Kennedy was interested, Snyder crafted a big space opera of his own and took it to his new home at Netflix where he’s already set up shop with his zombie franchise, “Army Of The Dead.” Snyder’s ethos seems to be go big or go home so for “Rebel Moon” he did just that, taking one big movie and splitting it into two, “Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire,” which comes out this year in December and “Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver” which is now set to arrive in April 2024.

Pablo Larraín already has an excellent track record premiering biopics at the Venice Film Festival with 2016’s “Jackie” and 2021’s “Spencer.” But the director’s latest biopic takes a different approach than those two films. How different? Well, “El Conde” takes the already horrifying story of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and turns him into a literal vampire.
