EastEnders icon Annette Badland, who fans will remember as Aunt Babe, is set to appear in Casualty for Charlie Fairhead's final episode on Saturday (March 16). She'll be playing Charge Nurse Shirley in special flashback scenes from the 1980s.
Derek Thompson, who has played Charlie for an impressive 38 years, is leaving the BBC medical drama and the flashbacks will show a young Charlie at Shirley's retirement party, nursing a hangover and receiving some crucial advice. However, a bomb explosion at the hospital tests Charlie and uncovers a secret connection between him and Dr Stevie Nash.
In current times, Charlie's life hangs in the balance after he was stabbed by a patient trying to steal Holby General's medical supplies. And, as he battles for his life, viewers will be transported back to the 1980s through flashbacks featuring Annette, reports the Daily Star.
Some former stars of Casualty have also returned for Charlie's farewell. Sunetra Sarker is back as Dr Zoe Hanna, while Ian Bleasdale reprises his role as popular paramedic Josh Griffiths, as reported by the Daily Star.
The following Saturday (March 23) will then see a double episode named 'Breaking Point' which will kick off the next batch of storylines for the show.
There's been lots of whispers about what's next for Casualty, as it's rumoured that cast and crew were told only two more years of the show would be made.
An insider spilled to the same magazine: "[Series 38] will end in July, then, all being well, the new episodes will continue to air from there. But the general word to everyone was 'two more years then bye' and 'we've got two more years'.
The contracts are rolling, so don't have an expiry date on them, so you never know, things could be extended again."
