FRIDAY UPDATE: Dune: Part Two added 42 international box office markets on Thursday, taking the offshore cume on the Denis Villeneuve-directed sequel to $20.8M in a total 55. This includes two full-days of play and previews in those markets.
The Warner Bros/Legendary Entertainment sci-fi spectacular is the No. 1 U.S. title in all markets and will add Spain and the UK today as well as 14 smaller hubs. Domestic previews, as Anthony has noted, came in over $12M.
On Thursday overseas, the Top 5 openers were Germany, Australia, Mexico, Poland and Brazil. In Germany, where the cume including previews is $2.4M, the start captured 70% market share of the Top 10 films. The results are roughly on par with Oppenheimer and ahead of the opening day of The Batman (+65%), Dune (+81%), Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (+119%), Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (+136%) and Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 (+155%).
Australia has a $1.3M cume including previews. The opening day nabbed an 81% share of the Top 10. Similar to Germany, the take is roughly in line with Oppenheimer, and ahead of the other comps including 51% bigger than 2021’s Dune, 81% over M:I7 and 170% above Rise of the Beasts.
Mexico pulled in $696K on Thursday, a clear No. 1 with premium formats performing strongly — IMAX repped 10% of the daily total and 4D 5%. Thursday’s bow was above Dune by 85% to give Villeneuve his biggest start ever in the market.
Poland kicked off with $361K, at a clear No. 1 on a non-traditional Thursday. That makes comps tricky as Thursday releases are not common, but it is above Barbie’s extensive Thursday previews and also Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore which bowed on a Thursday.
Brazil nabbed $331K at No. 1 and four

Naman Ramachandran Robert Schildhouse will serve in an expanded role at streamer BritBox International following the departure of global CEO Reemah Sakaan. Schildhouse, who previously had stints with Hulu and CBS, joined the streamer in 2022, with his most recent position being general manager, North America, and group editorial for BritBox International, where he was instrumental in driving the service’s business growth in the U.S. and Canada.
BritBox International has its new leader following BBC Studios‘ takeover of the streamer.

An Open Call ending April 9 has been announced March 18 for submissions from local Spanish feature film projects in development or in post-production, and series projects in development.
With a solid offshore hold, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is closing in on $500M globally. The overseas weekend brought in $51.2M across 73 markets, a 40% drop versus last session (-37% excluding China). The international box office cume through Sunday is $289.4M, and worldwide the running total is $494.7M. The latter figure means the film has already surpassed Villeneuve’s 2021 Dune worldwide.

Directed by BAFTA-nominated Iranian-born director Babak Jalali, the black-and-white movie tells the story of Donya, a young woman working at a Chinese fortune cookie factory in the San Francisco bay. Formerly a translator for the U.S.
Naman Ramachandran Bollywood film “Shaitaan” has scored a hefty opening, according to data provided to Variety. The film marks the first collaboration between billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Studios, Bollywood A-lister Ajay Devgn’s Devgn Films and Panorama Studios. “Shaitaan” scored a worldwide weekend gross of $9.8 million, including India, according to numbers from Panorama Studios.

K.J. Yossman BBC Studios has tapped Nicola Pinn for the newly-created role of chief operating officer of factual productions. BBC Studios factual managing director Kate Ward unveiled Pinn’s promotion.
Naman Ramachandran BBC Studios has bought British broadcaster ITV‘s 50% stake in streamer BritBox International for £255 million ($322 million), the companies revealed on Friday. The streamer was founded in 2017 as a joint venture between BBC Studios, which is the commercial arm of the British broadcaster, and ITV. “The transaction will provide net proceeds including loan repayments and accrued dividends and after tax of around £235 million,” the companies said.
BBC Studios has paid £255M ($321M) to acquire ITV‘s shareholding in their joint venture streamer, BritBox International — the biggest ever single transaction for the BBC’s commercial wing.
Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent The Sundance queer drama “Sebastian,” directed by up-and-coming Finnish-British director Mikko Mäkelä, has been bought by Kino Lorber for U.S. distribution, along with a string of international buyers. Represented in international markets by LevelK, the film made its world premiere in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Leo Barraclough International Features Editor Sebastian Stan, whose “A Different Man” screens in the Berlin Film Festival, Christoph Waltz and Tom Wlaschiha, the “Faceless Man” in “Game of Thrones,” were among the guests at Studio Babelsberg Night, the historic Berlin film studios’ party at Soho House Berlin held to celebrate the 74th edition of the festival. The event was supported by Mexican tequila brand Don Julio, the Motion Picture Assn. and Little Moons.
Alex Ritman 42, the L.A.- and London-based management and production company behind titles including “The Silent Twins,” “The Girl Before” and “The Flatshare,” has appointed former Universal International Studios exec David O’Donoghue to the position of chief operating office with immediate effect. O’Donoghue will run the company’s operations and business development globally, in addition to having oversight of business affairs and production across the portfolio. He’ll work from 42’s London office.
