The number of people being treated in Dumfries and Galloway’s hospitals for alcohol-related conditions fell last year.
But the number of admissions to psychiatric hospitals is at its highest for a decade.
The figures from Public Health Scotland show there were 708 alcohol-related hospital admissions in the region in 2022/23 – down from 732 the year
before.
That’s the equivalent of 483.2 stays per 100,000 people.
Of those admissions, 630 were to general acute hospitals, with 597 of those emergency stays.
The previous year there were 657 admissions to general acute
hospitals.
But the figures also show that there were 78 alcohol-related admissions to psychiatric hospitals in 2022/23.
That’s up from 75 the year before and the highest figure since 87 stays were recorded in 2013/14.
Across Scotland, there were a total of 31,206 alcohol-related hospital admissions, down from 35,187 in 2021/22.
There were 28,800 general acute hospital stays – down from 33,096 – and 2,406 psychiatric hospital admissions – up from 2,160 the previous
year.
