Downton Abbey's Lady Mary, played by Michelle Dockery, is all set to surprise her fans with a tough new look in the creator of Peaky Blinders' latest series. As Lady Mary, she was the picture of elegance, but now, nine years after Downton Abbey finished, she's coming back to our screens as Estella Quinn, a much more rough-around-the-edges character, in This Town. Estella has a hard life; she's been kicked out of Birmingham by the IRA and her husband who uses guns.
She wanted to be a singer, but now she drinks a lot of vodka instead. The show's writer, Steven Knight, created the role so BBC viewers could also hear Michelle sing, which is one of the reasons the actress was tempted to take on the role of Estella. She told the Mirror: "When I read the script, that was the scene that did it.
I thought, 'I'm playing this role'." Estella is certainly very different to Michelle's role in Downton Abbey, as she sports big wild hair whereas Lady Mary had a neat little bob. Michelle enjoyed trying on the wig, saying: "I just loved getting the wig on." At 42, Michelle feels she shares some things with her character Estella as she told Radio Times: "I come from Romford in Essex, and I had a similar upbringing. What I love about This Town is the depictions of areas that would have been very grey as bright and beautiful.
Estella is troubled and she's been exiled from her community but I relate to her fierce spirit." Michelle, who makes music with Michael Fox says songs are really important for the people in This Town. She said: "They're struggling in some way in life, and the music roots them all." Both a high octane thriller and a family saga, This Town opens in 1981 at a moment of huge social tensions and unrest. Against this
