Doctors fans have started a petition to save the iconic BBC lunchtime soap from getting axed, after it was announced that it will be wrapped up next year. Doctors has been on the air for an incredible 23 years, and fans were devastated to learn on Wednesday, 18 October, that the Corporation has decided to let it go due to a number of cost reasons.
As the BBC announced that the soap will be permanently taken off-air in 2024, viewers are pulling together to try and find a way to keep it. In the petition statement, which has been posted on Change.org, a group of fans urged "the BBC to reconsider this decision and keep Doctors on screen".
It was labelled "Save the BBC's Long-Running Daytime Soap Doctors," and encouraged others to sign in the hope of giving the show another chance. "As a loyal viewer of the BBC's daytime soap "Doctors" for over 20 years, I am deeply saddened by the recent announcement of its cancellation," the notice began.
"This show has been a staple of the BBC's daytime schedule for more than two decades, providing entertainment and comfort to millions across the UK. "The axing of this beloved series after 23 years is not just an end to another TV show - it represents a loss in our daily routines and shared cultural experiences." The avid soap fan continued: "The decision to cancel "Doctors" comes despite its consistent performance in ratings.
"According to Broadcasters' Audience Research Board (BARB), "Doctors" regularly attracts over one million viewers per episode, demonstrating its enduring appeal among audiences. "We urge the BBC to reconsider this decision and keep "Doctors" on air.
This long-running soap opera holds significant sentimental value for many viewers like me who have followed it through
