A leading doctor has explained the reasons why it can be potentially harmful to treat heartburn with over-the-counter medication every time.
In a recent episode of the ZOE Shorts podcast, host Jonathan Wolf discussed the definitions, causes and treatments for heartburn with gastroenterologist and doctor Will Bulsiewicz.
During the episode, Dr Bulsiewicz explained some of the most common treatments for heartburn and acid reflux, and why these medications can actually be damaging in the long run.

According to the NHS, heartburn is a burning feeling in the chest caused by stomach acid travelling up towards the throat - also known as acid reflux.
If the acid reflux continues to persist, and doesn't go away with treatment, it is then called gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).
Dr Bulsiewicz also added: "It can also have many symptoms with the classic being a burning sensation in your oesophagus, which we often refer to as heartburn. This is so widespread that it affects nearly two in every 10 people globally."
The expert also explained the organ that is affected by acid reflux is called the oesophagus. He added: "It's a tube that connects the throat down to the stomach, and it serves a simple purpose, which is transfer.
"It transfers the things that you swallow from your throat down to your stomach, and it's supposed to be a one-way street. Things are not supposed to go back into the oesophagus.
"It's intended to be a one-way street, and so this is like a car driving the wrong way down the road."
