Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Gray has opened up on her regrets about undergoing a nose job following the release of the iconic movie in 1987. Jennifer, now 62, starred as Frances 'Baby' Houseman in the hugely popular flick, where she starred alongside Patrick Swayze, who played Johnny Castle. After the film's huge success, Jennifer underwent two rhinoplasty operations which left her unrecognisable to others in the industry and led to her struggling to get more work.
And in a new interview, the New York-born actress has admitted that actor Michael Douglas was just one person who did not recognise her at a premiere following her second nose job. "That was the first time I had gone out in public. And it became the thing, the idea of being completely invisible, from one day to the next.
In the world's eyes, I was no longer me," Jennifer explained to PEOPLE. Jennifer, who is now working on a Dirty Dancing sequel, admitted that she had resisted getting a nose job her whole life but ultimately "understood" that other, successful Jewish actors had undergone the procedure to "assimilate". She said: "I understood that you had to change your name and you had to do certain things, and it was just normalised....
You're just trying to fit into whatever is the group think." In a separate interview with the New York Times, Jennifer explained she was encouraged to get a nose job by her mother and three plastic surgeons. However, her second operation left her nose “truncated” and “dwarfed”. So much so that she recalled an airline employee, who was a huge fan of Dirty Dancing, didn't recognise her.
