Director Julia Ducournau Returns To Cannes With Mysterious New Film ‘Titane’

Ethan Shanfeld Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Titane” is coming to the U.S. on October 1.Neon, who nabbed stateside acquisition rights to the Julia Ducournau film back in 2019, made the announcement Friday on Twitter.The film centers around Alexia (Agathe Rousselle), a serial killer impregnated by a car who disguises her gender and goes incognito as a lonely fireman’s (Vincent Lindon) long-lost son.

If you’re the studio Neon, you give the film in question, the body horror “Titane,” a plum fall Oscar-worthy release date in the U.S., and you also hew it towards Halloween, given its darker and f*cked up tendencies. Neon has just announced that “Titane,” directed by acclaimed French filmmaker Julia Ducournau (“Raw“), has been given an October 1 release date in the U.S.

NEON has set a theatrical release date for its Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner Titane, the distributor’s second after Bong Joon Ho’s 2019 Parasite which continued on to win a historical Best Picture at the Oscars for a foreign film. Titane will be hitting theaters on Oct. 1. NEON acquired Titane back in September 2019.

Palme d’Or for one of the most brazen and divisive films to screen in competition in recent years. The manner in which it was announced was equally startling as the ceremony started where it should have ended, with Lee mistakenly announcing the Palme d’Or laureate from the get-go.

Even though its title might have worked just fine for one of the perennially youth-obsessed director’s previous films, here it serves as an indicator of life swirling down the drain.
