The 'dignified' husband of an elderly woman who was killed after being struck down on a pedestrian crossing told the driver who hit her 'I forgive you' as she was spared jail.
Grandmother Patricia Dermody, 75, was crossing Wellington Road in Ashton-under-Lyne when she was hit by a Mercedes CLK-class. The driver was 58-year-old Julie Parkin, who had pulled off from a set of traffic lights and struck Mrs Dermody as she was still walking across the road.
Tameside Magistrates' Court heard how Parkin had her two grandchildren in the car at the time and was on her way to treat them to a McDonald's. The children had been 'singing away' to music, when Parkin, who works voluntary at a local church, became 'distracted' by the child sitting in the front seat and crashed into the victim.

Mrs Dermody was rushed to the Salford Royal Hospital from the scene but tragically died 10 days later on December 28, 2021. Her 'dignified and brave' widower Terence said the family held no malice for Parkin, knowing that she would also have to live with what she had done.
In a touching moment inside the courtroom as Parkin was sentenced, she turned to the victim's family sitting in the public gallery and said: "I am so sorry". Mr Dermody replied: "I forgive you".
Andrew Hey, prosecuting, told the court how the accident happened at around 2.10pm on December 18, 2021, while Mrs Dermody was out on a Christmas shopping errand with her husband. Mr Hey said: "The defendant and her two grandchildren were travelling in a black Mercedes CLK, one child was in the front passenger seat.

The UK is central to the heritage of my children,” Harry last year told the court in a written statement read out by his lawyers.
