One day after Deadline revealed that Netflix beat out seven other bidders for an untitled international heist comedy package built around Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy has boarded as director and joined the roster of producers headed by Genre Films’ Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon, Reynolds through his Maximum Effort banner, and Dana Fox, the Lost City scribe who will write the script.
Levy is currently directing Reynolds in Deadpool 3, which Kinberg is producing. Levy and Reynolds also teamed on The Adam Project, which is the third most viewed Netflix film in the streamer of that history. Levy just directed all the episodes and was EP through his 21 Laps on the Netflix limited series All the Light We Cannot See, which just received a Golden Globe nomination.
Molly Milstein and Margy Love will be exec producers. Kira Goldberg and Ori Marmur are overseeing at Netflix.
The pitch is untitled, but it’s set up as an ensemble in the spirit of an Oceans Eleven. It is also set in the international arena. The idea originated from Fox and Kinberg, and they pitched it to Reynolds and Maximum Effort. There were eight buyers vying for the project, and that whittled down to five and finally four before Netflix prevailed. Sources said Fox is being paid mid 7-figures to write it and the producing deals are high 7-figures.

Considering his hilarious multiple Emmy winning work on Schitt’s Creek, this markedly different feature filmmaking debut as writer/director/producer and star from Daniel Levy is a revelation – and a welcome one. The appropriately titled Good Grief explores exactly what that name implies as Levy uses his own experience as an impetus to paint a larger picture of love, loss and grief in all its complexity. But at its heart this impressive, if sometimes tonally dicey story, is also about the complications – and importance – of friendship in a scenario that revolves around a trio of BFF’s who take a life-changing trip to Paris and get more than they each bargained for.

How confident are Paramount Pictures and John Krasinski in their new family-friendly fantasy movie, “IF”? Well, for one, Krasinski was so inspired by the idea—which he wrote and presumably is inspired by his own children— he decided to put his “A Quiet Place” franchise aside for the minute to direct this story about imaginary friends (I.F., get it?). And for two, it has a prime summer release date of May 17, 2024, which means Paramount has huge confidence in it.
