A dad says he feels lucky to be alive after suffering a bleed on the brain and a punctured lung in a 'hit and run' in north Manchester. Teacher Andrew Holroyd, 50, spent a week in hospital with a series of nasty injuries following the horror smash in Higher Blackley last month.
Experienced cyclist Andrew was riding home from work when a VW Golf which was turning right off Victoria Avenue crossed his path and ploughed into him.
He was shunted into a nearby van and was thrown off his bike and over its bonnet, landing on his head. As he lay stricken in the road the car drove off and the occupants still haven't been traced.
Andrew now says he believes his helmet saved his life as he thanked bystanders for their help and appealed for anyone with information that may police catch the culprit, to come forward.
Andrew, who is Head of Science at the Great Academy in Ashton, Tameside, was cycling back to his home in the Jericho area of Bury at the time of the collision, at around 5:30pm on Tuesday March 29 with the dark blue Golf heading towards him in the opposite direction.
It stopped to turn right into Tweedle Hill Road and flashed to let a light blue-coloured van out. "Presumably because they could see me coming the van, which I think was a British Gas van, didn't move, and it's at that point the car obviously decided it was going to turn. I had no option then I knew it was going to hit me. I only remember up to that point really, my mind has sort of blacked out the incident itself and I just remember coming to in the road."
He has since been told after hitting the car he was propelled across the van's bonnet before landing on his left side which took the brunt of the impact.
