A couple has claimed they were told to "f*** off back to England" by restaurant staff after being accused of not paying for meals in three different venues.
Angela and Ian McKie visited Crete last month, staying in Koutouloufari, in the north of the island. However, one restaurant posted pictures of the pair on Facebook, accusing them of not paying their bill on August 30 - which was the third such incident.
However, the couple told the Liverpool ECHO that at one restaurant they did not want to pay €12 for an "overcooked" chicken dish and let staff know.
Angela, 54, said: "We ordered two starters and two main meals. Ian had the spaghetti Bolognese, which was fine. I had the chicken souvlaki, it was overcooked and the chips were raw.
"I complained to the waitress, but she just smirked. We asked for the bill, but said we wouldn't be paying for the chicken, which was €12. The manager then said we should've complained earlier, which we did do."
The couple, from Netherley in Liverpool, said the staff at the restaurant made Angela and Ian feel uncomfortable when they complained about the quality of the chicken. She said the manager then threatened that they "would be in a police cell tonight" if they didn't pay for it.
The Facebook post then said the couple were "thieves" and that they had left three restaurants without paying, including the one where they ordered the chicken. Bizarrely, Angela said they did not even eat at the other restaurants they were accused of stealing from.
She said: "It's been terrible, it has upset all of our family. We're constantly trying to defend ourselves - there have been vile comments about us that aren't the truth. I'm not being branded a thief. It ruined the holiday."
