Could ‘Elvis’ Cinematographer Mandy Walker Make History by Becoming the First Woman to Win Both ASC and Oscar Trophies?

James Friend won the Oscar tonight in the Best Cinematography category for his work on Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front, beating out fellow cinematographers Darius Khondji, Mandy Walker, Roger Deakins and Florian Hoffmeister.

While it's highly unlikely we'll see a repeat of last year's infamous slap, tonight's Academy Awards could still make history - albeit in rather less dramatic fashion. While Will Smith will not be present - he received a ten year ban after storming on stage mid-ceremony last year to slap comedian Chris Rock - there remains the potential for some groundbreaking first-time winners and major career milestones. Roger Deakins, legendary cinematographer and knight of the British realm, cut to the chase: In his view several of the best examples of cinematography are missing from this year’s Oscars list.

Elvis Presley's abandoned private jet has relocated to Florida where a popular YouTube star hopes to transform the once-opulent aircraft into a RV.  The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s 1962 Lockheed JetStar made the journey from Roswell, New Mexico, to Florida, traveling more than 1,600 miles after it sat abandoned in the desert for 40 years. It is now being stored in Plant City, Florida, where James Webb of "Jimmy’s World" on YouTube has already begun re-envisioning the piece of history.  Webb bought the battered jet for $234,000 at an auction at the Roswell International Air Center in New Mexico on Jan 8 — which would have been Presley’s 88th birthday. "It was the biggest financial purchase I have ever made, outside of a house, and this was ironically more expensive than my house," Webb told FOX 13.

The novel quickly became a #BookTok sensation — and popular beyond the social media app — after it was released in 2019.

The Oscars are now just a week away and Sunday provided three guild award ceremonies to provide hints at who may take away Hollywood’s most prestigious prizes. The Daniels’ “Everything Everywhere All At Once” continued its winning streak at the ACE Eddie Awards for editing and the WGA Award for screenplay, but they didn’t complete the trifecta at the ASC Awards.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor The American Society of Cinematographers handed out its best visual storytelling in feature film award to “Elvis” on Sunday night, and in doing so, Mandy Walker has become the first woman to win the top prize in the society’s history. Walker triumphed over Greig Fraser (“The Batman”), Darius Khondji (“Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths”), Claudio Miranda (“Top Gun: Maverick” and Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”) in a very competitive race.  Walker‘s win comes as Oscar voting ends on March 7, where she is also nominated. She became only the third woman ever nominated for cinematography for her work on “Elvis.” Rachel Morrison (“Mudbound”) made history as the first female DP to land a nom in 2018, while Ari Wegner was nominated last year for “The Power of the Dog.”

Thania Garcia Karol G’s deeply introspective “Mañana Será Bonito” has made a historic entrance on the albums chart as the first all-Spanish-language record by a female artist to hit No. 1. The collection — which spans pop, rock, reggaeton, Mexican music and electronica — is also the Colombian artist’s first leader on the Billboard 200. All four of Karol’s studio albums have charted on the all-genre Billboard 200, though “Mañana” is the first to enter the top 10 of the list. Before this, Karol’s highest charting effort was her last 2021 record, “KG0516,” which reached a peak of No. 20. Only two other all-Spanish albums have previously led the list, both were by reggaeton titan Bad Bunny (“Un Verano Sin Ti” in 2022 and “El Ultimo Tour del Mundo” in 2020).

Riley Keough revealed that filming a sex scene with her real-life husband Ben Smith-Petersen for her new series "Daisy Jones & the Six" was unexpectedly "awkward." During a Thursday appearance on "Late Night With Seth Meyers," the 33-year-old actress explained that in one scene, her character Daisy "hooks up with a random person" and the show's producers told her that casting the Australian stuntman in the cameo role would be "so funny."  Meyers then asked Keough if simulating intercourse with her spouse on set was "more or less awkward." "It was more awkward," the Golden Globe nominee admitted.  She continued, "I think that they were thinking it would be less awkward. And then we got there, and they're like, 'This is really uncomfortable." "For one, I've never had pretend sex with my husband," Keough added with a laugh.

Hanging over the proceedings will be the ghost of the generation that invented visual storytelling. Although they’re gone, they’ve left a legacy to their descendants: continue to extend the craft and push the liveliest art into the future while adapting tools and techniques that evolve from year to year. Directors of photography will heed that advice. For them, reaching an audience emotionally has always been the result of intuitive manipulation of tone aided by the skillful application of optical and photographic tools – all in concert with other film arts such as direction, acting and editing. Trends have evolved year to year, culminating lately in large-format cinematography, with its fresh image architecture and distinctive depth of field.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” has surpassed over 150 million hours viewed since its release on Oct. 14, 2022. The film, which dominated the BAFTA Awards in London with a record-breaking seven wins, including best film, director (Edward Berger), adapted screenplay, cinematography, sound, original score and non-English language film, climbed up to No. 2 on the global list, according to numbers released by Netflix. Berger’s World War I epic tells Paul’s (Felix Kammerer ) journey from being a young, enthusiastic school boy wanting to join the army to a tired, worn soldier. It has been on the global Top 10 Non-English Film list for 14 weeks and has reached the Top 10 Films in 91 countries, including Germany, the U.K., U.S., Australia, France, Mexico and South Korea.
