Coronation Street star Millie Gibson has paid tribute to campaigner Sylvia Lancaster following her passing on Tuesday morning. Sylvia was the mother of Sophie Lancaster, who was murdered after she and her boyfriend Robert Maltby were targeted for being goths. Since her daughter's passing in 2007, aged 20, Sylvia has spent the last fifteen years campaigning to create education programmes to combat prejudice and intolerance against those from alternative subcultures.
She was given an OBE in 2014 for her efforts. Sadly on Tuesday morning, a statement released by the Sophie Lancaster Foundation confirmed her passing, saying it was "sudden and unexpected". Upon hearing the news, Corrie star Millie shared an image of Sylvia with the caption: "Utterly shocked.
What an amazing, inspiring woman. "She's with her girl now," she added with a red heart emoji. Last year, Coronation Street tackled the issue of hate crime during one of its storylines that had many similarities to what happened to Sophie.
Sophie was murdered in a Lancashire park in 2007 as she defended her seriously hurt boyfriend from attackers as they were targeted for their appearance. She passed away thirteen days later in hospital. Ryan Herbert and Brendan Harris, both 15 at the time, were sentenced to life in prison for the attack.
Meanwhile, the complete statement on Sylvia's passing on Tuesday read: "This is the hardest statement to write. It is with great shock and disbelief that we announce that Sylvia Lancaster has passed away. "She died early this morning in Blackburn hospital.
