Coronation Street bid farewell to one soap legend last night as fan favourite couple Spider and Toyah went their separate ways. Spider, played by actor Martin Hancock, first made his appearance on the ITV soap 26 years ago and has once again left the cobbles and ended things with his soulmate Toyah Battersby.
The pair had dated when they were teenagers so when Spider returned after being away for over 20 years - having left his role in 2001 before appearing in 2002 and 2003 - fans were delighted that their love story could play out once more. And last night, Martin bowed out from the soap after his return last year. In his final scenes, Spider cried as he shared his love for Toyah.
Sadly things came to an end for them as Spider chose his job as an undercover police officer over Toyah, after she decided to give him an ultimatum.
The pair shared emotional scenes together as they said goodbye to each other, and Spider left the street seemingly for good.
Toyah begged Spider to change his mind before she confessed that she understood his decision and that he would never be able to leave his job. Spider admitted he wanted to stay or wanted her to come with him, but the pair realised it would not work out.
And with their agreement, Spider and Toyah embraced in emotional scenes and he went on his way.
Viewers of the ITV soap were absolutely 'heartbroken' as they flocked to social media to discuss the emotional episode. One fan tweeted: "I feel for Toyah first losing Imran and now Spider."
Another said: "If Toyah ever leaves Spider HAS TO come back for her. My heart is broken." A third tweeted: "Toyah and Spider have known each other since they were teenagers this is so sad."
