Deadline has launched the streaming site for its Contenders Television: The Nominees, out annual award-season event that this past weekend shined a light on panel presentations from 34 Emmy-nominated series featuring 117 cast and creatives from 16 broadcast and cable networks and streamers.

The upcoming sixth and final season of Disney Television Studios’ mega-hit This Is Us is sure to see some emotionally stirring storylines. In fact, during Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees event, series creator Dan Fogelman said he brought studio execs to tears during a Season 6 story pitch meeting on Zoom.

Disney+’s first TV series launch, the nine-episode WandaVision combined a wholly original premise that somehow felt familiar by its blatant homage to classic sitcoms that the witch Wanda conjured to mask her grief in losing her soulmate, Vision, to a brutal death we all saw in Avengers: Infinity War.

After winning acclaim and Oscars for your two most recent movies, what do you next? Well, if you are Barry Jenkins, whose Moonlight won Best Picture and Original Screenplay for him, and whose If Beale Street Could Talk won an Oscar for Regina King, well you tackle the most ambitious project imaginable, but one that has been brewing and calling out your name for two decades.

Eugene Ashe’s romance drama Sylvie’s Love is a love letter to jazz, Motown music, and 1950s and 1960s Doris Day-like cinema. It is also Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Television Movie after it made its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

When Paul Bettany was approached for the title role in Alan Ball’s Uncle Frank, he was perhaps as skeptical as he was excited. “I’m a big Alan Ball fan, but also sort of a ‘glass is half empty’ type of fellow, so I went, ‘I’m going to get the one sh*t Alan Ball script,’” the actor joked. “I read it and it wasn’t, of course. But then I had lots of questions about whether I could and should play the part.”

“You wait your whole career for everything to come together the way that this one has, and a lot of it is luck,” admitted The Boys showrunner Erik Kripke of the acclaim achieved by the Amazon Prime Video series based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s hardcore, satirical, political and extremely poignant comic series. “The right subject matter, that has a lot of different layers and depth to it, [and] that happens to be talking about the exact second we’re living in.”

Aside from the Paramount Network drama Yellowstone completing a third season as cable TV’s most watched show, the drama received its first Emmy nomination, for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program.

Producer Robin Roberts was joined by star and fellow producer Danielle Brooks at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees awards-season event for Lifetime’s panel on Robin Roberts Presents Mahalia, which has been Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Television Movie.

Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square was just “a perfect little storm,” executive producer, star and composer Parton said during a panel for the Warner Bros Television movie at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees awards-season event.

Although fans of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale may have been surprised to see Elisabeth Moss’ June finally cross over into Canada and out of the evil grasp of Gilead in Season 4, the writers have been planning for that moment for some time. “I think what was most important was to remember the lightness of being young and the freedom of your mouth,” The Queen’s Gambit star Moses Ingram said about playing her character Jolene as her younger and older self in the Netflix limited series.

Peter Morgan’s The Crown showed that the fourth time might yet be a charm for the Netflix series, which tied with Disney+’s The Mandalorian to net the most nominations—a hefty 24—at this year’s Primetime Emmys.

As a Tony, Emmy and Grammy winner and Oscar nominee who just recorded her first solo album of original music, Cynthia Erivo is well-acquainted with artistic challenges. But the prospect of portraying Aretha Franklin in National Geographic’s third season of its Genius anthology series was unlike anything she had previously faced.

Uzo Aduba calls HBO’s In Treatment “huge” for her – a first lead performance and one she hopes will widen the path for diverse actors in highly complex roles. Aduba stars as psychotherapist Dr. Brooke Taylor, who leads four wounded patients towards self-realization and a degree of peace even as she battles her own demons in a densely worded series where she presides over every scene.

Stars Matthew Rhys and John Lithgow, along with cinematographer David Franco and production designer John P. Goldsmith, joined Deadline to talk all things Perry Mason during the HBO panel at Contenders Television: The Nominees awards-season event.

HBO’s The Undoing may have been a limited series, but it doesn’t mean star Hugh Grant hasn’t been thinking about his character Jonathan Fraser and what he would be up to now.

The HBO limited series Mare of Easttown, which received a whopping 16 Emmy nominations this year, got off to such a compelling start with a title character so strong that Kate Winslet admitted in a chat for Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees award-season event that she needed to read only two of the seven episodes created and written by Brad Ingelsby to commit. Winslet was joined in the panel by Ingelsby and Craig Zobel, who helmed all the episodes.
