Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Ken Marino credits his pal Adam Scott for making the unlikely and unexpected “Party Down” revival a reality. “Adam helped guide this and make this happen in a real way,” he tells Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “I think everybody in that cast recognized how special it was, and to just kind of go back and to get to do some more, to be with these people again, creatively, it’s a real gift.” The first two seasons of “Party Down” aired on Starz in 2009 and 2010; the revival takes place a decade after the show’s last episode and features the returns of Marino as Ron, the slightly clueless catering manager who now owns the business — well, running it out of his van — and Scott as Henry, the sardonic failed actor who’s now a teacher and working on the side with Party Down to help pay for his alimony.

Extrapolations executive producers Dorothy Fortenberry, Michael Ellenberg and Scott Z. Burns, who also serves as creator, writer and director, joined Deadline’s Contenders TV event to talk about what went into creating a potentially fictitious and disastrous future Earth.
Extrapolations drops viewers into 2037, where climate change has ravaged the planet. As fires scorch the Middle East and rising tides engulf sinking cities, world leaders, scientists and everyday citizens must figure out how to save what’s left of life on Earth. The series is told through eight interconnected stories exploring climate change’s devastating impact. Extrapolations stars Kit Harrington, Meryl Streep, Sienna Miller, Forest Whitaker and Marion Cotillard.

“When I was doing the research for Contagion, all of the scientists who I spoke to said the same thing,[that[ it wasn’t really a matter of if there was going to be another pandemic, it was just a matter of when,” Burns explained. “And obviously, I had no idea. They had no idea. But we had seen other viruses jump into the human population like SARS had already happened in [the early 2000s]. I think the similarity here [for Extrapolations] is that all the scientists we spoke to on this show said a slight variation; it’s not a matter of if we’re going to have climate change; we’re all living through it, especially here. It’s a question of at what point do we change our behavior so that we can stop the very worst of it, and that’s what sort of motivated me to write the show. A lot of it was written during the pandemic. And Michael was incredibly supportive. And then I was lucky enough to have Dorothy join us on this ride.”

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Steve Martin casually dropped the release date for the third season of “Only Murders in the Building” during his “You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today!” touring show alongside Martin Short. At Saturday’s 8 p.m. show at the Walt Disney Theater. Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando, Flor., which also included Jeff Babko and The Steep Canyon Rangers, the comedic duo unveiled the news while warming up the audience at the start of the show. According to two patrons who were in attendance, Martin and Short were delivering updates on what they were up to recently, showing a picture of them alongside their co-star Selena Gomez and two new cast members for Season 3, Oscar and Emmy winner Meryl Streep and Golden Globe nominee Paul Rudd. At one point, Martin stated, “Catch the new season August 8,” which was followed by Short responding, “Our show is like Steve trying to pee — it streams for 33 minutes.”
