Ariana DeBose becomes the first Afro-Latina queer actor to win a SAG Award in the best supporting actress category for her performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. After accepting her award, the Puerto Rican descent star said her winning indicates “that doors are opening,” adding, “It’s an honor to an Afro Latina queer woman of color and a dancer and a singer and an actor.”DeBose also said that although she is the first, she will not be the last.

Dame Helen Mirren has won the Lifetime Achievement SAG Award at last night’s ceremony, Sunday 27 February. Helen, 76, first came on the acting scene at the age of 18, and has since gone on to star in at least 80 movies over the course of her career.The Collateral Beauty actress wowed in a pink gown with floral detailing for the awards, which she paired with a matching pink headband. Helen was introduced at last night by fellow British actress Kate Winslet, 46, who, for an unknown reason, couldn’t physically attend the event so gushed about Helen from a remote location via video link.
