Co-op Live has accused the AO Arena of attempting to block its opening for “competition” reasons at a crunch licensing meeting.
Manchester’s soon-to-open 23,500-seat venue is set to welcome punters from April, and is in the midst of applying for a licence to operate. Its bid was considered by Manchester City Council on Wednesday (February 21), where bosses took aim at notable objectors ASM Global — the operators of the AO Arena, its main rival.
ASM previously rejected claims they were only objecting over competition fears in written submissions to the licensing committee, claiming it only wanted to promote licensing objectives of ‘safeguard public safety and the prevention of public nuisance’.

The firm argued that Co-op Live should close by midnight at the latest, and not be given the ability to open 24/7 on 25 occasions every year as requested - which is an effort to host sports events like UFC for a global TV audience, it's thought.
But during a lengthy hearing at the Town Hall, Mark Donnelly, chief operating officer of Co-op Live developers Oak View Group, hit out at the city’s other arena. He said: “We are quite disappointed to see [ASM] are trying to put conditions on us when they operate with an unrestricted licence.
“As part of ASM’s objections, we feel these are competition based. We feel there’s very little from a licensing point of view. A lot of transport issues were dealt with at planning and that was approved unanimously.”
