Cillian Murphy’s new movie to open Berlin Film Festival

Thanks to “Oppenheimer,” all of Hollywood wants a piece of Cillian Murphy. So is it any surprise that Sony shelled out a ton for the latest in the “28 Days Later” franchise? THR reports that the studio won the bidding war for a new sequel in the zombie franchise, which comes with an additional sequel if all goes well.

Caroline Brew editor During an “Oppenheimer” panel featuring Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh and Jamie Dornan as the moderator, Pugh revealed that some technical difficulties arose during a sex scene between her and Murphy. “In the middle of our sex scene, the camera broke. No one knows this, but it did,” Pugh said.

Cillian Murphy has shared his reaction to receiving his first ever Oscar nomination for his role in Oppenheimer. It was announced earlier today (January 23) that Murphy was up for the Oscar for Best Actor alongside Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti and Jeffrey Wright.

Robert Oppenheimer for the first time. “It was really in the hair and makeup tests, which we shoot on Imax and in black-and-white,” Nolan told Variety.

The upcoming 74th Berlin Film Festival looks set to be its starriest edition in years with Kristen Stewart, Adam Sandler, Cillian Murphy, Lena Dunham, Sebastian Stan, Amanda Seyfried and Rooney Mara among the talent due to attend this year.

Berlinale Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian announced his final Competition and Encounters line-ups on Monday ahead of bowing out of the festival alongside Managing Director Mariette Rissenbeek at the end of the upcoming 74th edition in February.

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent For his fifth and final edition, outgoing Berlin Film Festival artistic director Carlo Chatrian has assembled a promising lineup, rich in prestige, star-driven titles as well as more eclectic films containing the political elements intrinsic to the fest’s DNA. “I am very happy and proud of this year’s lineup,” Chatrian tells Variety. “I think it achieved the balance between highly anticipated titles by filmmakers who are relevant in cinema history and, as always, films that you don’t expect to find in competition.

The Berlinale put out a statement expressing its sympathy for the “victims of the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East” and making it clear that its 74th edition would be a place for filmmakers on all sides of the Israel-Palestinian conflict, at its press conference on Monday.

Berlin Film Festival is unveiling its full competition lineup. Berlin’s previously announced opener is Ireland-set drama “Small Things Like These” starring “Oppenheimer’s” Cillian Murphy and directed by Tim Mielants (“Peaky Blinders”).

The 2024 Berlinale kicks off next month on February 15 with “Small Things Like These,” starring Cillian Murphy. But right before then, a winner from last year’s festival hits theaters in NYC.

Thanks to “Oppenheimer” and a Golden Globe victory for Best Actor, Cillian Murphy is one of cinema’s “it” actors of the moment. And it’s a long time coming for the “actor’s actor.” So is it any surprise a drama starring Murphy will open the 2024 Berlinale next month? No, it is not.

Small Things Like These, an Irish-Belgian production. Directed by Tim Mielants from a screenplay by Enda Walsh, the international cast includes Cillian Murphy, Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley and Emily Watson.

Ellise Shafer When Martin Scorsese is lauded with Berlin Film Festival‘s Honorary Golden Bear next month, the awards ceremony will be accompanied by a screening of his 2006 film “The Departed.” The crime thriller, which won four Oscars including best picture and director, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg. The film tells the story of an Irish mob boss who plants a spy within the Massachusetts State Police just as the police assign an undercover cop to infiltrate the gang.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter “Treasure,” a father-daughter road trip drama starring Lena Dunham and Stephen Fry, has sold worldwide rights to Bleecker Street and FilmNation Entertainment. The movie, formerly titled “Iron Box,” will have its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. Bleecker Street and FilmNation Entertainment, which recently teamed on “Waitress: The Musical,” will co-distribute the movie theatrically later this year in the U.S.
