Some parents and guardians need to update their details to ensure Child Benefit payments will continue after an upcoming deadline on August 31. This affects those with a child aged 16 who had stayed in education or training, but has since left or due to leave this month.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) guidance on GOV.UK explains that Child Benefit payments will continue until the first of four specific dates throughout the year is reached after their 16th birthday - the next one on the calendar is Thursday, August 31. However, HMRC also advises: “If you fail to update your details in time, you may still be able to claim Child Benefit, but your payments might be late.”
The payment is made to people who are responsible for bringing up a child aged below 16 or a young person under 20, if they are still in full-time education or on certain approved training courses.
The weekly payment from HMRC is worth £24.00 for an eldest or only child and £15.90 for additional children. The benefit is paid every four weeks in arrears, either on a Monday or a Tuesday, and there is no limit to how many children a parent or guardian can claim for.
If your Child Benefit payment amount changes and you’re not sure why, money experts at Income Tax have shared four possible reasons.
Your Child Benefit will stop automatically on August 31 after the child turns 16, unless you let HMRC know that your child is continuing in full-time education or training or they are joining the armed forces or a government-sponsored careers programme.
If your child stays in education or training but then decides to leave, you will continue to get Child Benefit until whichever date after their 16th birthday comes first:

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor “Oppenheimer” has burst into the Oscar race. With the earnest and urgent cultural fabric of “To Kill a Mockingbird” and the philosophical measure of “The Tree of Life,” writer, director and producer Christopher Nolan’s chronicle of the creation of the most destructive weapon ever used stands as the most ambitious and vital piece of filmmaking of his career. Adapted from the book “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, “Oppenheimer” tells the complicated and morally fraught story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer who led the effort to develop the atomic bomb. Nolan and his stellar ensemble of actors have amassed 27 Oscar nominations collectively throughout their careers. One of those who surprisingly hasn’t nabbed one is Irish actor Cillian Murphy, who plays the titular scientist. With dry wit and womanizing charm that effectively makes him the scientific version of Michael Fassbender in “Shame,” Murphy is an effective vehicle to lead the viewer through through reams of scientific terminology. In addition, his tour-de-force performance, which is sure to be in real consideration for best actor, is best displayed when showcasing the emotional toll such a creation can have on a person. Lead actors from competitive best picture players, especially from biopics, have been consistently recognized over the past few decades in Oscar history (see Benedict Cumberbatch for “The Imitation Game” or Christian Bale for “American Hustle”). Murphy could find his time has come after decades of memorable turns in “28 Days Later” (2002) and “Breakfast on Pluto” (2006).

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Saoirse Ronan revealed last September to People magazine that she tried and failed to film a cameo in the upcoming “Barbie” movie, which is directed by her “Lady Bird” and “Little Women” filmmaker Greta Gerwig. It turns out Gerwig eyed even more “Barbie” cameos, including one that would’ve reunited her and Ronan with Timothée Chalamet. The Oscar nominee also appeared in “Lady Bird” and “Little Women.” “Well, it was always going to have to be like a sort of smaller thing because she was actually producing at the time, which I am so proud of her for,” Gerwig said of having to scrap Ronan’s cameo. “And of course, it’s brilliant. But it was going to be a specialty cameo. I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy, and both of them couldn’t do it, and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much. But it felt like doing something without my children. I mean, I’m not their mom, but I sort of feel like their mom.”
