Chicago violence: 5 dead, 32 shot amid bloody weekend

Chicago firefighters responded to a one-vehicle crash on Lake Shore Drive expressway involving an expensive red Ferrari that was a weekend rental. The vehicle was being driven by a 22-year-old man around 12:45 a.m.

A suspect accused of seriously wounding a Chicago cop during a traffic stop claims he panicked after smoking marijuana while driving with a suspended license, prosecutors said. Aaron Okelola, 25, is facing felony charges of attempted murder of a police officer and misdemeanor fleeing and eluding in the late Monday incident in the city’s Princeton Park section, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Three men, including a 17-year-old and a convicted felon 19 days into two years of probation, were hunting for rivals when they fired on Chicago police officers over the weekend, prosecutors said Tuesday.

A Chicago police officer was hospitalized on Monday night after being dragged by a vehicle following a traffic stop on the city's South Side, according to reports.  At least two suspects were in custody after the incident, which occurred around 8 p.m. at West 95th and South Lafayette streets.The officer was taken to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities in Chicago said Sunday that shootings this weekend across the city involved at least 47 victims, including five who died. There were six people shot on Saturday morning in the city’s Auburn Gresham, according to ABC7Chicago.

Chicago police are searching for an SUV possibly used by a gunman who shot a 5-year-old boy in the head with a stray bullet Monday evening as he was playing with an iPad inside a home.  The child was on a couch around 7:30 p.m. when an SUV drove by the home on the 200 block of West 115th Street and someone inside opened fire, police said.  The child was shot in the head and rushed to the hospital to undergo surgery.

CHICAGO – The father of a 5-year-old girl who was found alone with her younger sister on a Chicago street says he thought she was safe with her mother. The girls, whose discovery late Sunday prompted a police search for their parents, were taken to Comer Children's Hospital and were found to be in good condition.
