When you think of some of the most iconic moments in an Aaron Sorkin-written film or TV show, they all likely take place indoors. Whether it’s a boardroom in “Social Network” or a courtroom in films such as “The Trial of the Chicago 7” or even “A Few Good Men,” many of the most memorable lines of dialogue from Sorkin’s past take place in the confines of four walls and a roof.
NBC topped Wednesday’s primetime again with its Chicago suite. Chicago Med led the way, delivering a 0.9 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 7.38 million viewers, the night’s largest audience in Nielsen Live+Same Day fast affiliate numbers. Chicago Fire (0.9, 7.08M) dipped a tenth from last week, while Chicago P.D. (0.8, 5.72M) was close behind holding steady.

Netflix said Thursday that it is making Aaron Sorkin’s Oscar-buzzed movie The Trial of the Chicago 7 available for free on for 48 hours this week to commemorate the 51st anniversary of the verdict in the trial at the center of the film. The news comes as Chicago 7 has been building momentum this awards season with five Golden Globe nominations, three SAG Awards noms and named one of AFI’s 10 best films of the year.

NBC’s Chicago trio led Wednesday night once again with Chicago Fire leading the way ticking up to a 1.0 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 7.33 million viewers, topping the evening in both regards. Chicago Med ticked down a tenth from last week delivering a 0.9 in the demo and 7.05 million viewers while Chicago P.D. rounded out the night holding steady at 0.8 in the demo and netting 6.16 million viewers.
It is truly unfortunate that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has disqualified Branford Marsalis’ riveting original score for the Netflix feature adaptation of the August Wilson play Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. AMPAS’ current rule is that a movie’s music needs to be comprised of 60% of original score, and apparently this feature love letter to 1920s jazz and blues falls under that quota.
