Cynthia Littleton Business Editor “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Being John Malkovich” screenwriter Charlie Kaufman took dead aim at Hollywood’s power structure in his remarks at Sunday’s Writers Guild Awards, where he was feted with the top honorary film award. “We trained to believe that what we do is secondary to what they do,” Kaufman said, with quiet intensity, referencing executives who make decisions out of fear in order to preseve their jobs. “Our work is to reflect the world, say what is true in the face of so much lying. The rest is window dressing at best, ‘Triumph of the Will’ at worst,” he said.
Kaufman didn’t elaborate about the guild itself or the tense contract negotiations that are expected to start on March 20 with Hollywood’s largest employers.
Kaufman invoked the work of poet Adrienne Rich. “Adrienne Rich wrote, ‘I do know that art means nothing if it simply decorates the dinner table of the power which holds it hostage.” The room grew quiet as Kaufman continued: “The world is beautiful. The world is impossibly complicated. And we have the opportunity to explore that. If we give that up for the carrot, then we might as well be the executives.” Then Kaufman got more personal. “I have dropped the ball, I have wasted years seeking the approval of people with money. Don’t get trapped in their world of box office numbers. You don’t work for the world of box office numbers. You work for the world. Just make your story honest and tell it. “They’ve tricked us into thinking we can’t do it without them. The truth is they can’t do anything of value without us,” Kaufman said. Kaufman thanked the WGA for prompting him to think about the nature of writing for Hollywood with the decision to bestow

Gavin Bridge Senior Media Analyst Entertainment-industry pros believe the writers have more leverage than the studios as they begin negotiations over a new contract, according to an exclusive new survey. One-third of respondents gave TV scribes a vote of confidence, as opposed to one-fifth who touted the studios’ clout in an online poll of 640 U.S. adults working in showbiz conducted on March 15-16 by insights firm YouGov. The survey was commissioned by Variety Intelligence Platform, which recently released the special report “Time to Strike?” What may explain the perception of the writers’ leverage is a sense that there’s newfound solidarity among members of the WGA, in the past a notoriously fractious group believed this time to be united around key issues, from its top showrunners to its newbie scribes.
Karen Bliss Juno Awards host Simu Liu ended the two-hour broadcast from Edmonton’s Rogers Place on March 13 with these immortal lines: “Sorry for the boobs.” Not something one would expect to hear at a Canadian music awards show and the “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” star didn’t need to apologize; they weren’t his boobs. Near the start of the show, a topless environmentalist avoided security and managed to get on stage as Avril Lavigne was introducing rapper AP Dhillon, the first Punjabi act to perform on the Junos. “I’m introducing an artist who’s blown up on the global music scene with the new wave of R&B, hip hop and pop records, fused…” she said, as the woman suddenly appeared onstage wearing only pink pants with matching durag and scribbled slogans on her back and arms.
Avril Lavigne was getting ready to introduce Canadian musician AP Dhillon, at the annual event in Edmonton, Canada Monday, when a topless streaker snuck on stage. The woman, who paraded around with her top off, hung around in the background before being noticed by the «Skater Boy» singer. Once Lavigne noticed the streaker, she shooed them off, telling the supposed fan to «Get the f**k off» the stage not once, but twice, before security escorted them away.It was a shocking moment in what's typically been a tame awards show, which was hosted again this year by Simu Liu.
Cynthia Littleton Business Editor AUSTIN, Texas — Patton Oswalt, Phoebe Robinson, Eric Andre, Chelsea Handler and others were in fine form on Friday night as Variety helped kick off the 2023 SXSW festival and conference with its Power of Comedy event. The kudos pay tribute to innovators in the business of being funny. Presenters and honorees who gathered at the Creek and the Cave nightclub in downtown Austin made mention of comedians facing a fraught moment as social norms and cultural attitudes are changing. Mike Lawrence, who hosted the second half of the night, noted that he had to show more identification when registering to get his SXSW conference badge than he would have to buy a gun.

Gene Maddaus Senior Media Writer Accepting the Writers Guild of America award for original screenplay on Sunday night, Daniel Kwan skipped past the typical thank-yous to his agent and manager and instead shouted out his strike captain. “Get involved,” he told the crowd. “If you don’t have a captain yet, go find one… Let’s go give ’em hell.” It was a fitting capstone on the event, which at times felt more like a labor rally than an awards show. The WGA is set to begin negotiations with the major studios in just two weeks, and the possibility of a writers strike may be as high as it’s been since the last work stoppage in 2007-08.
There were three different guild award ceremonies on Sunday, but the one that studio executives were paying the most attention to was the Writers Guild of America Awards. And, no, it wasn’t because they were looking for more guidance in which screenplay to vote for on their Oscar ballot.
Cate Blanchett steps out in a silky dress for the 2023 Writers Guild Awards West Coast Ceremony held at Fairmont Century Plaza on Sunday night (March 5) in Los Angeles.
Cynthia Littleton Business Editor Meredith Stiehm, president of the WGA West, got right to the point in her remarks Sunday at the guild’s 2023 award ceremony. With contract negotiations less than two weeks aways, Stiehm rallied the troops about the need for solidarity, and she emphasized the guild’s role as serving as the “good sheriff” helping to tame the Wild West for writers. The guild, Stiehm told the crowd at the Fairmont Century Plaza, is “walking around like Gary Cooper — low key but watchful, vigilent and a little swagger.” The guild is “looking to keep the peace” but is devoted to enforcing the rules established by its contracts. “The guild says there are rules, there are laws,” she said referring to a fight that the WGA recently settled over $42 million in residual payments owed to guild members.
The Oscar winning scribe of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind delivered a spot-on acceptance speech for his WGA Laurel Award honor, ripe for times as the WGA squares off with the AMPTP in another round of contract talks.
