The 40-year-old was regarded as the gem of the Celtic academy and was primed to live up the lofty hype before Vio Ganea ruined his upward trajectory with a disgusting tackle on his Scotland debut in 2004. Kennedy battled back but was never able to get to the level which earned him Martin O'Neill's trust with eye-catching displays against Barcelona and Rangers as a teenager.
And now Kennedy, speaking on the Celtic View podcast, he said: "I went from a period of making my debut, playing in Barcelona, playing at Ibrox, then all of a sudden everything is taken away. You're sitting literally in the hands of the doctors Roddy MacDonald, who was here at the time, we visited the hospital and got some scans. The doctor in Glasgow at the time, his words were basically 'I've never seen anything like this. It was such a horrific injury.
"Everything in my knee, other than the medial ligament, had been obliterated and snapped to pieces. A terrific doctor, and he was a guy who dealt with a lot of the NFL injuries, I remember him saying to us that you only really see this in two cases. One in the NFL when it's a total wipeout on somebody's standing leg, and the other being a car crash."
