CBS Orders Three Dramas for 2022-2023 Broadcast Season, No Comedy Pilots Going Forward

Star Wars fans got a treat Thursday. Harrison Ford made a surprise stop at the Star Wars Celebration at the Anaheim Convention Center to give an update on "Indiana Jones 5."  Thursday’s event marked the first in-person convention since 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic.  Harrison Ford made a surprise appearance at the Star Wars Celebration event in Anathema, Calif., Thursday.

ID and discovery+ have revealed their 2022-2023 true crime slate, which includes specials focusing on the murders of Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur, and Gabby Petito.In August, ID will take a look at the trial of brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez in “Mendendez Brothers: Misjudged?” as well as the deaths of two hip-hop stars in “Who Killed Biggie and Tupac?” (currently the show’s working title). Joe Otterson TV ReporterCBS has unveiled their fall 2022 schedule, which largely keeps intact the schedule the broadcaster established last season.The network is very heavy on drama programming this year, with only four comedies on the fall schedule. CBS picked up four new dramas for next season, while also passing on all of their comedy pilots. To that end, only Mondays and Thursdays on CBS will feature any comedy programming.

The streaming network also tweeted the news on Tuesday.The series will introduce a new generation of the Dutton family, according to a press release from the streaming service obtained by the site.“It’s set to explore the early 20th century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain West and the Duttons who call it home,” the streamer said in the release.No further information was released about the characters Mirren, 76, and Ford, 79, will portray.

Wowza, Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone”-verse is not playing. Today, Paramount+ announced that Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren and Academy Award nominee Harrison Ford will star in the highly anticipated next installment of the “Yellowstone” origin story, previously announced as “1932” (working title).

Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford are joining the  family. The duo will headline the next prequel series in Taylor Sheridan's franchise following 1883, Paramount+ announced Tuesday.

Joe Otterson TV ReporterHarrison Ford and Helen Mirren are set to star in Taylor Sheridan’s new “Yellowstone” prequel “1932” at Paramount+, Variety has learned.The show follows the Dutton family in the titular year, a time of Prohibition, the Great Depression, and westward expansion. “1932” is a followup to “1883,” the latter of which told the story of the Dutton family as they made their way to Montana to found what would become the Yellowstone Ranch in the mothership series. “1932” was ordered to series at Paramount+ back in February.

Fox has rolled out its 2022-2023 programming slate, giving its post- Super Bowl LVII slot to Gordon Ramsay’s “Next Level Chef,” and announcing several news shows for the broadcast network and Tubi. The network doesn’t yet have “9-1-1” and “The Resident” lined up, however, with renewal negotiations still in progress Monday.“We’re in good faith negotiations with 20th [Century Television] and based on our long history with that company we think we’re in pretty good shape,” Charlie Collier, CEO, Fox Entertainment, said on a conference call with reporters Monday.New shows coming to the network are the country music drama “Monarch,” starring Susan Sarandon, Trace Adkins and Anna Friel; crime anthology series “Accused,” from the producers of “Homeland and “House,” and “Alert,” a missing persons drama from Jamie Foxx and John Eisendrath.

ABC’s L.A. Law sequel has gone the way of the network’s NYPD Blue sequel. The network has passed on the pilot, headlined by Blair Underwood, reprising his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins in addition to executive producing.

ABC has passed on its half-hour pilot Josep, starring comedian Jo Koy. While ABC is not proceeding with the existing pilot, the network brass want to get a comedy headlined by Koy on the air. The hope is to redevelop the idea, which is built around Koy playing a character loosely based on himself. It is too early to say whether that will happen and whether the current creative team will remain involved but the intent is to stay in business with Koy.
