Jem Aswad Senior Music EditorOne of the wonders of music streaming is its borderlessness. Back in the day, a person might never hear, let alone purchase, music outside their country or comfort zone if they didn’t happen to wander into that area of a record store or radio dial.
But streaming has midwifed seemingly unlikely genre collisions like hip-hop and emo rock, and perhaps most prominently, it supercharged the rise of reggaeton, the Latin-hip-hop hybrid whose rhythm has become the most ubiquitous sound of the past decade. Now, music companies are positioning themselves for even more discovery and cross-pollination: In the past five years, the world’s top three label groups, Sony, Universal and Warner, have expanded their global reach by opening offices or partnering with local companies in relatively untapped regions of Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. The region that many feel is ripest for discovery is the Arab world, which has as rich, distinctive and historically vital a musical history as any culture but has been largely shunned by the West for reasons that have little to do with music.
Yet this year the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, the global trade group for recorded music, identified the Middle East and North Africa as its fastest-growing region. In April 2021, during National Arab American Heritage Month, Universal made a big move to take the sound global, launching Universal Arabic Music. The label has a brace of thriving artists and at the helm, Lebanese native Wassim “Sal” Slaiby, whose company, SalXCo, manages top stars including the Weeknd, Doja Cat, Brandy, Swedish House Mafia, French Montana and Sean “P.
Diddy” Combs. In 2020, Variety recognized Slaiby as Hitmakers

As the NBA approaches another season, big questions linger. Will the Golden State Warriors repeat as champions? Will LeBron James surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in career points? Will Jamie Foxx‘s basketball comedy “All-Star Weekend” ever get released? READ MORE: ‘Day Shift’ Review: Jamie Foxx’s Vampire Film Packs An Action-Packed Bite But Not Much Else Initially scheduled for a February 16, 2018 release to coincide with that year’s NBA All-Star Game, “All-Star Weekend” has yet to make it into theaters.

Coldplay has a new music video out!
Jamie Foxx is implying that political correctness is why his movie “All-Star Weekend” has yet to see the light of day.
Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Piven filmed an NBA comedy in 2016 titled "All-Star Weekend," but the film has not yet appeared in theaters, and many have begun to wonder if it will ever see the light of day. "All-Star Weekend," which also stars Robert Downey Jr., Benicio del Toro, Gerard Butler and Eva Longoria, was supposed to hit theaters in 2018 before being pushed to 2019. However, the premiere, once tied to the NBA All-Star Weekend, never happened.
Two wide studio releases will hopefully prevent this summer from reaching another low at the box office after last weekend’s $67.3M. If there’s one movie that’s going to pull ahead, sources are betting on Crunchyroll’s Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. That distributor has proven in a short amount of time that they can draw a great deal of anime fans in a Friday through Sunday span. The Tetsuro Kodama directed animation movie is looking at anywhere from $12M-$15M, ahead of Universal’s genre lion-stalking film, Beast, starring Idris Elba; that pic hoping for at least double digits.
Jamie Foxx, 54, and Jeremy Piven, 57, started filming “All-Star Weekend,” a movie about two NBA-obsessed friends in Indiana. Piven’s character is Steph Curry’s biggest fan, while Foxx’s worships LeBron James.

Jem Aswad Senior Music EditorMusically speaking, Norway is too often unfairly overshadowed by its neighbors, the overachieving Sweden — which has mastered the art of speaking modestly while flexing outrageously — on the east, and the eccentric Iceland and Scotland to the west. But with a population of just under 5.5 million, the comparatively understated country punches far above its weight in both the world’s music scene and its economy, and its booming talent was on ample display at the latest installment of the long-running Oya Festival in Oslo last week. While there were plenty of Anglo and American acts — ranging from headliners Gorillaz, Florence + the Machine and Nick Cave to H.E.R., Little Simz, Freddie Gibbs, Remi Wolf and Perfume Genius — equally if not more compelling was the diverse array of home-grown talent.
