Gone are the days when applying foundation meant smothering the skin in a mask of maquillage that you couldn’t wait to wash off at the end of the day. If you had any hint of a skin concern – blemishes, sensitivity, dry skin – the feeling back then was that wearing makeup was actively making your skin worse.
Today’s smart foundations fuse cosmetics with skincare, formulated with ingredients you’d more typically expect to find in your serums (hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, niacinamide), and in quantities and combinations effective enough to make a genuine difference to your complexion. But don’t just take our word for it; the studies into the longer-term benefits are impressive.Tests carried out on this new bread of bases showed a variety of proven, cumulative effects from daily wear, such as skin smoothing, anti-ageing, blemish reduction and radiance boosting.
But that’s not to say that these foundations should be seen as a replacement for a good skincare routine, explains Dr Eleanor Bradley, No7’s skin science expert, as traditional skincare will usually contain much more concentrated active ingredients. “However adding in an additional dose of these ingredients via foundations can be a great top up,” she says.
So what words should you be scanning the back of your bottle for? “Look for ingredients that target your specific concerns, just as you would with skincare products,” says Dr Bradley.Think hyaluronic acid for hydration, vitamin C to brighten, and vitamin A to help with signs of ageing, “while all skin ages and types can benefit from protective ingredients such as SPF and antioxidants,” Dr Bradley adds.
