California Becomes First State To Surpass 2 Million Covid-19 Cases

Florida surpassed 1.5 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 when approximately 15,000 new cases were identified Tuesday, according to the state Department of Health.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said today an extension of the stay-at-home order in parts of California is “likely” but stopped short of making it official. The three-week order issued in early December is set to expire for Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley on Tuesday.

California inmates with special needs were among the first to get vaccinations against COVID-19 in the Golden State this week, according to a Tuesday report. Sixty-five inmates and employees of California Health Care Facility in Stockton, volunteered to receive the vaccine Tuesday, said Steve Crouch, director of public employees for the International Union of Operating Engineers, which represents maintenance and systems employees.

California became the first state in the nation on Thursday to surpass 2 million cases of the novel coronavirus, according to estimates from Johns Hopkins University.  Estimates from the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center show the state has recorded 2,002,494 cases of COVID-19.
