A builder has shared some of the signs that damp and mould could be creeping in this winter, as well as ways to tackle it. With the colder weather arriving, many households could experience the odd bit of condensation.
This can cause damp if it isn't dealt with, which could then lead to mould. As well as wreaking havoc on your home's walls and roof, mould can be dangerous - particularly for people with respiratory illnesses.
In a video uploaded to HYPE Building's YouTube channel, an expert named John Sale shows people how to spot the early signs of damp, and how to deal with it. John warned that damp could cause cracks in brickwork, which can cost thousands of pounds to fix.
As reported by the Mirror Online, John highlighted the three major signs which signal that a property has damp issues. These signs include:
He also explained that the property that he was working in was experiencing water on the kitchen floor whenever it rained. In the video, John explained that the issues highlighted were caused by tiles which had damaged the guttering in this instance.
Because of this, rain was pouring into what he called the render, which is "like a sponge". Another problem the property had was that the guttering of the main roof was running over the extension, and falling onto the kitchen roof.
He added that the brickwork under the flooring outside was causing further issues, explaining: "Sand and cement between the brickwork beneath the ground level is all perished away, and that's how water is entering the property."
The builder's solution was to fix the drainage pipe on the main house, and add a pipe so it runs vertically down the side and not over the extension. He would also put concrete over the flooring outside instead of slabs
