British members of an alleged drug trafficking cartel believed to be responsible for more than 10 per cent of Europe's cocaine trade have gone on trial in Greece.
The four men - John Ellis, Anthony Bennett, Stephen Wray and Neil Jones - face allegations of being involved in an international drug plot after cocaine was found in a shipment of bananas.
Greek police seized a shipment of 300kg of cocaine last year which was sent from Italian city of Calabria, the criminal territory of the 'Ndrangheta mafia clan, the Liverpool Echo reports.
Armed officers then swooped on a luxury rented villa overlooking the port city of Thessaloniki in June 2022 and arrested Ellis, 39, Bennett, 49, Wray, 52, and Jones, 46 . They have been on remand since.
Police seized hundreds of blocks of cocaine, a pistol, bullets, radio and positional equipment and more than 10 mobile phones. A fifth man, Ryan Ellis, understood to be John's brother, was also charged in his absence and is understood to be in custody in the Netherlands, according to reports from Mail Online.
The men were also said to be linked to another huge shipment of cocaine, around 700kg, which had arrived from South America via Italy.
The court heard that Wray was absent from the courtroom yesterday after suffering from a medical episode and was in hospital.
A lengthy joint investigation involving American Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Italian customs officers and Greek Police led to the raids as the multi-agency task force investigated an international drug trafficking ring sourcing cocaine in South America.
The Greek authorities have alleged the organised crime group was responsible for up to 10% of Europe's cocaine trade.
