Bristol, Connecticut, police ambush: Suspect described as 'rowdy' divorced dad who was 'always drinking'

The shooting deaths of two Connecticut officers and wounding of a third punctuated an especially violent week for police across the U.S. and fit into a grim pattern: Even as more officers left their jobs in the past two years, the number targeted and killed rose. According to organizations that track violence against police, 56 officers have been killed by gunfire this year — 14% more than this time last year and about 45% ahead of 2020's pace.The country is on track for the deadliest year since 67 officers were killed in 2016.

The suspect in the Connecticut ambush that resulted in the deaths of two Bristol Police officers was friends on Facebook with one of the victims.  Nicholas Brutcher's list of friends on the social media platform includes fallen officer Alex Hamzy, who appeared to go by Alex Yzmah on Facebook.  Hamzy, 34, was killed in the line of duty Wednesday night.  Bristol Police Chief Brian Gould said in a news conference that Hamzy, who was raised in the city, graduated from Bristol Eastern High School in 2006. Retired Connecticut Police Sgt. John Krupinsky spoke out Friday about the harm facing law enforcement officials after two officers were killed in an alleged ambush late Wednesday night.  The two Bristol Police Department officers, Sgt. Two police officers were fatally shot and another was seriously wounded in an officer-involved shooting in Bristol late Wednesday night, Connecticut State Police announced. Police have yet to release details of the incident, and it is unclear to which department the officers belonged. Local media say the shooting occurred in a residential area late Wednesday night.

Suspected New York City subway mass shooter Frank Robert James missed his federal court date Wednesday, records show, prompting the judge to order U.S. Marshals to "use all necessary force" to drag him from a federal holding cell to the hearing. A woman accused of being a member of the so-called "green goblin gang" that attacked two teenagers on a Manhattan subway train turned herself on Monday and was released Tuesday without bail.  The NYPD said Mariam Issouf, 26, was arrested Monday in connection with the Oct. 2 assault on the northbound N platform at the 42 Street-Times Square subway station.  New York City police released images of four woman who were allegedly part of a group of suspects wearing neon-green bodysuits while attacking two women on a subway train.  (Fox New York ) Two 19-year-old female victims told NYPD officers they were engaged in a verbal dispute with a group of unidentified individuals.

New York police reportedly launched a strike force after the shooting outside of Rep. Lee Zeldin’s home.  Speaking to reporters near the home of the Republican candidate for governor, Suffolk Police Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison said he is putting the strike force together for the Shirley area.  "I’m always concerned about retaliation, so putting this strike force together and grabbing officers throughout the county and kind of flooding them in a certain community is our M.O.," Harrison on Monday, according to Newsday.

A San Antonio police officer has been fired after shooting a teenager who was eating in a parking lot outside of a McDonald’s.

The FBI released its national crime data for 2021 this week, but it lacks data from nearly 40% of police departments nationwide, including massive forces in cities such as New York and Los Angeles.  "I don't think you could get national numbers, at least not useful national numbers, from this data," Jacob Kaplan, criminologist at Princeton University, told the Marshall Project earlier this year. "It's going to be really hard for policymakers to look at what crime looks like in their own community and compare it to similar communities." The FBI switched to a new recording program at the start of January 2021, called the National Incident-Based Reporting System.The new reporting method was rolled out to provide a more thorough snapshot of offenses, such as what weapons were used in an incident, types of property stolen, and more detailed demographic information on victims and perpetrators of crimes.

Six gas stations in New London County, Connecticut, were robbed at gunpoint Friday evening. Norwich police received a report of a gas station robbery on Washington Street at around 7:45 p.m. Friday, with the suspect described as a 5'9" Black male wearing a mask, black puffy winter jacket, gray sweatpants and black shoes.

New York’s state police superintendent resigned Friday, days after Gov. Kathy Hochul said he was being investigated for his handling of internal personnel matters. In a statement, Hochul thanked Kevin Bruen for "his years of public service" and said that First Deputy Superintendent Steven Nigrelli will take over as acting superintendent on an interim basis.
