Keeping Celtic alive nearly killed Brian Dempsey.
Now the heart bypass survivor can celebrate the 30th anniversary of the night he stood on the steps of Celtic Park and delivered the iconic message that has reverberated throughout every year of the club’s existence since then. “The game is over. The rebels have won.” Eight words that summed up Fergus McCann’s takeover from the dynasty of families who had taken Celtic to within hours of extinction.
A club that almost closed down because of what the Celtic fans decried as the “biscuit tin” mentality within the boardroom. The irony now is, three decades on, the children and grand-children of the supporters who threw money at McCann and Dempsey to keep Celtic afloat have taken to voicing their modern-day displeasure with the current Parkhead regime.
Rangers are threatening their domestic supremacy at a time when Celtic have never been so wealthy. But Dempsey will have nothing to do with any criticism of principal shareholder Dermot Desmond and chairman Peter Lawwell.
He said: “In 1994 we wanted Celtic to be a club for the people. It was what the club’s history said we deserved to be. Fergus and Dermot wanted a small business to become a major public company. My initial thought was that Dermot would invest in Celtic and eventually sell his shares and move on. He did not. He stood his ground and stayed the distance. I was wrong about him.
“Dermot and Fergus made Celtic solvent, built a magnificent stadium and you only need to look at the trophies Celtic have won over the 30 years since the takeover. These trophies would not have been won had it not been for people like Dermot. The supporters should bear that in mind.”
