Brendan Rodgers admits he has to prove himself again at Celtic.
The Irishman returned to the Parkhead dugout for the first time and received a warm response from fans inside Celtic Park as he led the Hoops to a 3-2 victory over Athletic Club in James Forrest's testimonial. The basques took a very early lead through Unai Gomez before Reo Hatate equalised. Iker Muniain restored the visitor's lead less than 60 seconds later and they were ahead at the break.
Rodgers made ten changes at the break, with Forrest coming off in the 49th minute to standing ovation. That reset did the trick as Alexandro Bernabei and David Turnbull turned things around to record a victory ahead of Saturday's Premiership opener at home to Ross County. The Green Brigade, who were vociferously critical of Rodgers when he left in 2019 and again after he returned, didn't attend the game.
But he was full of support for the fans as a whole. Rodgers said of his return: "It's amazing, it feels like home. I've been fortunate enough in my career to manage some fantastic clubs but nothing gives the feeling like being back here with people that I would regard as family and just being in the arena here.
"So I'm looking forward to it and I'm going to relish every second of it. But I think going away made me realise what I had and I was never sure if I would have that again. To be able to have the chance to have that again with the players, that staff and the supporters, with that I need to win and I need to prove myself again.
