A brave bystander has been hailed for coming between a pervert and his victim.
James Walker launched a sex attack on a lone woman on a train in August 2021. The 35-year-old sat next to his victim on a Wigan to Liverpool service and sexually assaulted her.
She repeatedly asked him to stop and tried to fight him off, but he refused and then exposed himself, Liverpool ECHO reports.
As the fiend continued to make sexual advances, another woman intervened. She shouted at Walker to leave his victim alone, then escorted her to a different seat.
The two women remained sitting together and Walker approached again. However, the second woman refused to move and blocked the beast from getting any closer to his victim.
Eventually, Walker moved away from the pair and got off the train at Edge Hill. He was later arrested and at Liverpool Crown Court last Friday, he was sentenced to 18 months in jail after being found guilty of sexual assault and exposure.
He was also hit with a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and must pay a victim surcharge of £156.
Investigating officer DS Stephen Kite said: "This was a hideous sexual assault which left the victim understandably traumatised. Over two years later she continues to struggle with what happened that evening.
"Despite her protestations Walker continued with his vile attack until a brave bystander found the courage to speak up and help the victim. We commend her bravery and that of the victim in reporting what happened.
"Walker's disgusting and reprehensible actions have landed him behind bars and with a SHPO which will help prevent other potential victims of his depraved behaviour. If you experience sexual harassment, we want you to report it. No incident is small or trivial."
