Box Office: ‘Inside Out 2’ Jumps for Joy With $62 Million Opening Day — the Biggest of 2024

That’ll be the presiding question as “A Quiet Place: Day One,” a prequel story in Paramount’s post-apocalyptic horror series, hits theaters on Friday. The film, which takes place a while before the Abbotts (the family at the center of the prior two movies) were forced into hiding from terrifying, sound-hunting creatures, is expected to collect a solid $40 million to $50 million in its opening weekend. The prequel cost $67 million to produce.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief “Inside Out 2” enjoyed a stellar second weekend at the South Korean box office, comfortably beating local thriller “Hijack 1971.” The Pixar animation recorded a week-on-week drop of only 15% to score $10.3 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis the box office tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Its market share through the weekend was a powerful 70%. Those performances give the film a $28 million cumulative after 12 days in Korean cinemas.

He noted too that midweek numbers have been “nothing short of phenomenal” with the global total now $380M through Tuesday. 

The Heart of Rock and Roll, the struggling musical built around the hits of Huey Lewis, will play its final performance at a matinee on Sunday, June 23. The show will have played 24 previews and 72 performances.

The announcement was made at the city’s State Theatre ahead of the Australian premiere screening of the Demi Moore-starring Cannes hit “The Substance.” The A$20,000 ($13,200) Documentary Australia award went to local filmmaker James Bradley, for “Welcome to Babel,” which charts Chinese-Australian artist Jiawei Shen’s plans to create an epic work.

The American animation film earned $12.3 million from 1.75 million ticket sales between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Over the five days since its Wednesday debut, it accumulated $14.7 million and 2.08 million ticket sales.

A Southern California wildfire has doubled in size overnight. The Post Fire, located in the Tejon Pass near Gorman, California, has grown on Sunday morning to more than 11,000 acres with zero percent containment, according to Cal Fire.

Will Smith’s latest movie Bad Boys: Ride Or Die has been a box office success in its opening weekend.The fourth instalment in the buddy cop action franchise Bad Boys, and sequel to 2020’s Bad Boys For Life, arrived in US theatres on June 6.Reuniting Smith and Martin Lawrence, and marking Smith’s second return to the silver screen following the infamous Oscars slap incident in 2022, the film was positively received.Alongside generally favourable reviews, the film amassed $56million at the domestic box office, and $104.6million globally. However, in a two-star review, NME criticised the film’s subplots, writing: “As the film’s title hints, Marcus also has a bizarre thing where he believes he can’t die … Needless to say, this irritating idea resurfaces time and again, to diminishing returns.”Compared with other major releases this summer, the film, which also stars Eric Dane and Vanessa Hudgens, was a close second to Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes in its domestic launch, which garnered an impressive $58million.Ride Or Die, which had a budget of $100million also had a successful opening weekend globally, collecting $19.3million in Europe, and reportedly setting franchise records in the Middle East and Latin America, according to The Hollywood Reporter.The first film in the Bad Boys franchise was released in 1995, and featured Lawrence and Smith as Miami narcotics detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett.
