Box Office: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ Kicks Off Summer Movie Season With $114 Million Debut

The Warehouse Project will be back in September, with the likes of Bicep, Honey Dijon, The Blessed Madonna and Jamie Jones on the bill for its 2023 season. It’s also revealed that it will be opening up two new areas of its Depot Mayfield home, including the roof.

CBS‘ summer schedule can be summed up in two words: “Big Brother.” The network will celebrate the 25th season of the beloved reality series with a 90-minute special on Wednesday, Aug. 2. Following the premiere, CBS will air episodes on Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

This will be enough to knock Disney and Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” out of the top spot, as the superhero tale is expected to pull in $32.89 million in its third weekend of release, bringing its North American total to over $267 million. On Thursday, “Fast X” raked in $7.5 million in previews, putting it on track to earn more than $60 million in its first weekend of release. That puts the tenth chapter in the “Fast” saga at No. 7 in terms of highest box office debuts, between 2021’s “F9: The Fast Saga” ($70 million) and 2019’s “Hobbs and Shaw” ($60 million). Globally, “Fast X” is looking to bring in $220 million overseas in its opening weekend. The movie cost Universal $340 million to produce and another $100 million to promote, so “Fast X” will need Fast Family members from around the world to speed to theaters in order to turn a profit.

In terms of Thursday previews, those movies made $7.1 million and $5.8 million, respectively. “F9” released during the pandemic, when around 80% of theaters were still shuttered, giving “Fast X” a shaky outlook in the U.S. However, international sales have played a major part in the “Fast and Furious” global box office hauls. “Fast X” is targeting $220 million overseas in its first weekend. After costing $340 million to produce and $100 million to promote, “Fast X” will need to keep its foot on the gas after it opens to net a large profit.

It’s picked up more than 40 feature films, such as “Hunger Games,” “John Wick: Chapter 4,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Knives Out.”

The actor stars in historical drama Jeanne Du Barry as King Louis XV, alongside director Maiwenn, which opened the world-famous event on the French Riviera. It comes a year after he won a court case against his ex-wife Amber Heard, who wrote an op-ed claiming Depp was an abuser.

Naman Ramachandran Disney’s “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” stayed atop the U.K. and Ireland box office for a second consecutive weekend with £5.4 million ($6.6 million) for a total of £23.9 million, per figures from Comscore. In second place, in its sixth weekend, Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” collected £858,444 for a total of £51 million. There were two debuts in the top five. Sony’s “Love Again” bowed in third place with £340,785 and Universal’s “Book Club: The Next Chapter” in fourth with £299,370. In a rare weekend with fewer new studio wide releases, IFC Films had a one-two punch at the box office with Matt Johnson’s film BlackBerry grossing $473k nationwide in 450 theaters, for a U.S. per theater average of $1.05k and cracking the top ten on Friday. It will gross an estimated $740k in North America this weekend, with Elevation Pictures handling Canada.

By comparison, recent Marvel movies such as “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Thor: Love and Thunder” declined by nearly 70% in their sophomore outings. Those are brutal falls, even for movies that debuted to more than $100 million. Opening in Korea on Wednesday, some three weeks after the beginning of its international and North American campaigns, “Super Mario” earned $4.67 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). The film has a cumulative of $5.76 million over its opening five days, plus previews. The film’s weekend numbers are the second highest opening tally recorded by any film this year in Korea. And its weekend score represented a comfortable 40% market share.
