At least seven people have been charged in an "elaborate" flying squirrel trafficking scheme in which poachers in Florida caught thousands of the rodents before selling them to buyers in Asia, officials said on Monday. Poachers are accused of illegally catching more than 3,500 flying squirrels, a protected species in Florida, over a three-year period, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

A Florida police vehicle knocked a motorcyclist off his bike during a high-speed chase Sunday along a freeway and was captured on video.  In a pair of videos uploaded to social media, several Florida Highway Patrol vehicles are seen chasing someone on a motorcycle on Florida's Turnpike in Delray Beach, 55 miles north of Miami.  The chase occurred next to a procession of bikers participating in the West Palm Beach Breast Cancer Awareness Ride Out, the Daily Mail reported.

A Florida man, wielding a machete was fatally shot by county deputies on Thursday, following an altercation with his sister, authorities said.  Deputies with the Polk County Sheriff’s office responded to an apartment on Freedom Drive in the unincorporated community of Frostproof around 9:00 p.m., according to a press release.

Florida Republicans have cut the voter registration gap with Democrats to a historic low, giving the GOP a boost during early voting.  Politico reported Thursday night that the difference in registration numbers for voters in the battleground state is the lowest in at least three decades. A Florida driver "escaped serious harm" after a hunk of metal crashed through his windshield on Tuesday, according to authorities. Eduardo Medina, 64, was driving on I-95, near Delray Beach, when the incident occurred, fire officials said.
