Black Hollywood Executives Still Lack Greenlight Power, Diversity Report Finds 

Anthony Hopkins certainly cemented his name in Hollywood history after he became the oldest recipient of a Best Actor Oscar at the age of 83. He took home the award in 2021 for his work in The Father, adding it the one he received in 1992 for playing Hannibal Lector in The Silence of the Lambs. The report also documents the relatively slow growth in behind-the-camera roles for people of color, particularly women and particularly among Latinos.“Last year, every time a big movie exceeded expectations or broke a box office record, the majority of opening weekend audiences were people of color,” said Ana-Christina Ramón, co-author of the report and the director of research and civic engagement for UCLA’s social sciences division.

The report includes survey responses and anonymous interviews with Black Hollywood executives, capturing a mix of both optimism and skepticism about the progress of those initiatives.“The intent is always good — the recognition that there is this big representation issue raised,” said one executive.

A new report from the Hollywood Bureau of the NAACP has found that the scarcity of Black executives in Hollywood has led to a plethora of films and TV shows that “are harming the African American community,” and that the “absence of Black control of media has rendered the community vulnerable to a host of debilitating impressions, ranging from negligent disregard to deliberate degradation.”
